Formal
art education began in Edmonton Art Gallery painting classes in 1962. I have
studied Business Administration, worked in the computer, retail, and energy
fields, studied Painting at the U. of Alberta. (Ext. Dept.) and graduated
from the Alberta College of Art, Metals Dept.. Since graduation, I have taught
jewellery courses at the A.C. Leighton Center, Alberta College of Art, Red
Deer College "Series", and held a variety of workshops throughout
Alberta. The ACAD Alumni Award of Excellence was awarded to me in 2002. In
2005 I was given the commission to build the prestigious Lieutenant Governor
of Alberta Arts Award medallions.
My 35-plus year professional career has centered on one-of-a-kind and custom
jewelry both in Calgary and Edmonton. Wayne Mackenzie, Designer Goldsmith
Ltd. and
my gallery, Electrum Design Studio have been serving our clientele in Edmonton
since 1985, and we have now relocated to Courtenay, BC.
Over
the years, a keen interest in the style of the early Greeks and Romans,
the
ancient Aztecs, contemporary Europeans and the Alberta landscape have been
juxtaposed with my love of spatial relationships, textural statements,
color
contrasts, accenting lines, and gemstones, to become important elements in
my work. Simplicity and strength of line and shape have been combined
with
these elements to create unified pieces that are able to stand as practical,
wearable fine jewelry, and works of art.
